Job Description

Under the general direction of the Executive Director (ED), the Finance Manager is responsible for oversight of the fiscal operations of the CSUSM Corporation.  This includes establishing and maintaining a strong corporate infrastructure for the effective oversight of all corporate financial operations and providing support for the day to day operations of the CSUSM Corporation. This position serves as the primary contact between the Corporation and the University Auxiliary Accounting that provides services to the CSUSM Corporation.  The Finance Manager will coordinate, along with CSUSM Accounting, all financial, and Chancellor’s Office audits.  This position must be familiar with non-profit 501(c)(3) requirements, CSU Executive Orders and Coded Memorandums, requirements and requests of the California State University Auxiliary Organizations Transparency and Accountability Act of 2011 (SB8), University policies, and reporting requirements.


Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance,  public administration, or a similar field (required);  master’s degree in business, public administration, or related field  (preferred)

Minimum of five years job-related experience (required)

Experience in a higher education setting, business environment, and/or non-profit corporation (required)

Proven ability to analyze organizational effectiveness, establish goals, and implement strategies for increasing overall fiscal performance (required)

Knowledge of statistical analysis (required); Understanding of research methods (preferred)

Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet scheduled deadlines (required) 

Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices, office methods and procedures (required)

Knowledge of governmental and/or non-profit accounting methods and related laws, rules and regulations

Must be able to conduct independent studies to prepare comprehensive reports and to make sound decisions and recommendation regarding financial activities for management decisions

Ability to effectively present information to management and Board of Directors and committees

Ability to analyze financial reports, forecasts, and audit documents and transactions

Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures

Ability to prepare financial statements, reports and presentations

Experience developing, monitoring, and reconciling budgets (required)

Ability to exercise independent judgment in decision making and to effectively assess when consultation is appropriate or necessary (required)

Ability to contribute to the success of the organization as an individual and as a team member (required)

Excellent listening, verbal, and written communication skills (required)

Strong teambuilding and collaboration skills (required)

Computer literacy and knowledge of windows-based computer software systems including Word and Excel (required); literacy and knowledge of PeopleSoft or integrated financial system (preferred)
