Under the direction of the IT Associate Director, the Senior Systems Analyst is responsible for account administration within the Associated Students’ Organizational Unit (OU) in the campus SDSU ID Domain as well as A.S. internal account management. Reviews daily/weekly compliance reports and takes corrective action as necessary.  Supervises the Systems Analyst and oversee the mentoring and development of Student Technicians. Coordinates advanced Help Desk projects between IT staff and Computer Roundtable (CRT) liaisons. Reviews and revises IT Disaster Recovery, IT Processes and Procedures, and other miscellaneous IT documentation as needed. Assists IT Associate Director and IT Manager with network and server administration.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Primary Functions

 

Assists with installing and configuring virtual machines using Oracle VirtualBox, Hyper-V and VMware ESXi
Maintains user accounts in Windows Active Directory and Micro Focus (Novell) eDirectory
Identifies and troubleshoots local and domain Windows Group Policy issues
Oversees Mobile Device Management (MDM) Solution
Supports end-users who have various backgrounds and levels of IT knowledge
Configures, administers and maintains the AS network environment consisting of approximately 45 servers, 300 PC nodes, and 435 users.  The AS network includes 3 full subnets and several partial subnets behind firewalls that branch off of SDSU’s backbone infrastructure
Maintains and supports a 50-node Apple OS X network
Maintains test network environment for pre-deployment testing and troubleshooting
Coordinates with Systems Analyst to ensure proper configuration and maintenance of desktop workstations
Evaluates new releases of company applications and performs testing in a virtualized environment.  Initiates limited deployment with test groups and requests feedback.  Once test phase is completed, coordinates with Systems Analyst and Computer Roundtable (CRT) members to launch organization-wide deployment
Supports A.S. applications, including, but not limited, to Microsoft Office 2019/365, Outlook, Google Workspace (Apps), Google Gmail/Calendar, Google Android, Apple iOS, McAfee Endpoint Security, Kronos Workforce Central/Payroll-HR, Abila MIP Fund Accounting, Sage Fixed Assets, Accruent Event Management System (EMS) Enterprise, InnoSoft Fusion/Daxko CSI SpectrumNG/Active Network member management software, EzCare child care management software, Adobe Creative Suite, Zoom and all current Internet browsers
Periodically tests disaster recovery methods.  Utilizes backup-to-disk, LTO tape technologies, and iSCSI shared storage
Responsible for ensuring the security of A.S. desktops is preserved
Ensures IT resources are labeled with fixed asset tags and submits paperwork to accounting for tracking purposes
Coordinates and completes annual IT inventory audit for accounting
Researches, recommends and coordinates all hardware/software purchases and replacements.
Configures and utilizes proper protocols to maintain connectivity to the University’s network
Supervises the Systems Analyst and Student Technicians
Mentors Student Technicians and oversees their development
Keeps up-to-date with current IT technologies
Ensures all deadlines are met and procedures followed

 

Minimum & Preferred Requirements

 

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science or related field or equivalent work experience required
Two years of specialized training in the computer field, equivalent to an Associate Degree preferred
Technical certifications such as CompTIA A+/Network+/Security+ or Microsoft MCSA/MCSE preferred

 

Experience:

Two years’ experience in system/network administration and prior supervisory experience required
Experience managing user accounts using Active Directory and eDirectory required
Experience with Mobile Device Management (MDM) Miradore, Apple Configurator, and SureLock solutions preferred
Experience with network troubleshooting tools/utilities (ping/tracert/arp/nmap/nslookup/etc)
Experience using remote support applications, including, but not limited to, Microsoft Remote Desktop, LogMeIn, TeamViewer
Experience with virtual environments to perform pre-deployment testing of software and troubleshooting of systems
Familiarity with Single Sign on (SSO)
Experience with Virtual Private network (VPN) clients and a basic understanding of how VPNs work
Experience with the following is highly desired: McAfee Endpoint Security, McAfee ePO console, Google Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, Apps Manager), Spiceworks, osTicket help desk, Microsoft Office, Symantec Ghost, Acronis True Image,VMware ESXi, Oracle VirtualBox, Microsoft Hyper-V, Accruent EMS Enterprise, Daxko CSI SpectrumNG, Active Network, InnoSoft Fusion, Avigilon Video Client, Four Winds Interactive, Spinetix, Carousel, Televic CoCon, Kronos WFC, Abila MIP Fund Accounting, Sage Fixed Assets, Micro Focus (Novell), basic UNIX/Linux skills, and a solid understanding of Group Policy and Access Controls
Working knowledge of current server operating systems, including, but not limited to Windows Server (2012, 2016, 2019), Micro Focus (Novell) SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES 11, 12, 15), Novell Open Enterprise Server (OES 2018 SP1 & SP2)
Experience with desktop operating systems, Windows (10,11), macOS (10, 11, 12)
Experience with the following network concepts: TCP/UDP, static/dynamic IP assignment, DNS, gateways, subnets, user authentication, public key infrastructure, remote management, VPN, network ports, and firewalls required
Prior experience in a computer help desk environment required
Experience with the following server applications and management tools is highly desired: McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO), Spiceworks, osTicket help desk, Zenworks, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), and Nagios

Knowledge of current server operating systems is required: Windows Server (2012, 2016, 2019), SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES 11/12), MicroFocus Open Enterprise Server (OES 2018)
Advanced knowledge of current desktop operating systems is required: Windows (10, 11), macOS (10,11,12)
Advanced knowledge configuring and managing MicroFocus (Novell) eDirectory and Microsoft Active Directory environments
Knowledge administrating and troubleshooting UNIX/Linux systems.
Knowledge designing and deploying Windows Group Policies to manage and secure end-points
Knowledge of the following network concepts: TCP/UDP, static/dynamic IP assignment, DNS, gateways, subnets, LDAP user authentication, replication of NTDS/NTFRS/replica rings, public key infrastructure, remote control/management, SSO, VPN, network ports, and firewalls
Knowledge of virtualization and virtualization-related concepts: consolidating multiple servers into virtual environments, shared storage utilization (iSCSI/NFS/SAN/multi-pathing), host resource allocation, and troubleshooting using snapshots/rollbacks
Assists in the management of Windows Active Directory and MicroFocus eDirectory.  Tests Windows Group Policies for security and end-point management.
Helps to maintain virtual infrastructure using VMware ESXi.  Utilizes virtualization to provide contingency/redundancy for production servers
Implements and maintains high availability of all server systems
Assists with identifying proper firewall rules.
Storage area network (SAN) environment
Experience with the following server applications and management tools is required: MicroFocus eDirectory management tools (iManager, iMonitor, dsrepair, dstrace), Novell ZENworks Configuration Management (ZCM) and Patch Management (ZPM), Microsoft Active Directory console tools (GPMC, ADUC, ADSS, ADDT, ADSI, Sonar, Ultrasound), Microsoft DNS, Microsoft Certification Authority, Microsoft Internet Information Services, Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio, Microsoft Windows Server Update Services, Symantec Backup Exec, SEP Sesam, and VMware ESXi, Veeam FastSCP, Veeam One Monitor
Knowledge of databases such as Microsoft SQL, FileMaker Pro, MySQL, and Sybase SQL Anywhere
Experience configuring and managing web servers (Microsoft Internet Information Services and Apache2) and securing sites with public key infrastructure through the use of SSL
Security-minded individual with the ability to develop and maintain security policies/procedures to harden systems on AS networks
Ability to identify necessary firewall rules and test implemented rules utilizing applications such as Wireshark, Nmap, netstat, and Portmon
Ability to manage multi-phase IT projects with minimal supervision
Ability to exercise independent judgment and work accurately and efficiently while interpreting and applying AS and SDSU policies/procedures
Ability to plan ahead and develop contingencies to ensure high availability of desktop systems for AS departments
Advanced working knowledge of current desktop operating systems is required: Windows 10-11, macOS (10-12), Linux (Ubuntu, OpenSUSE)
Ability to troubleshoot hardware/software issues on workstations and servers
Knowledge of network architecture, including protocols and basic configuration
Knowledge of the 7 layers of the Open System Interconnection (OSI) model
Ability to efficiently troubleshoot current and legacy hardware and business applications in an enterprise LAN environment
Ability to learn and quickly apply new technical information (including processes/procedures)
Ability to interact professionally with clients in-person, over-the-phone, or via email/chat
Ability to exercise independent judgment and work accurately and efficiently while interpreting and applying A.S. and SDSU policies/procedures
Ability to setup and troubleshoot networked printers and install maintenance kits
Ability to take instruction and give instruction in a professional manner
Willingness and ability to train users on software, hardware, and best practices

COMPENSATION

Starting salary range: $34.62 – $38.46 per hour

 

SCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONS

This is a regular, full-time position. Flexibility and willingness to work long and irregular hours and days, including evenings, weekends and holidays as needed.

Depending on task requirements, physical demands may require standing and walking for extended lengths of time and may require lifting, pushing, pulling, moving and carrying items up to 50 pounds (unassisted) and 75 pounds (with assistance).

EMPLOYMENT CATEGORY:     Full-Time, Hourly, Grade 8, Non-Exempt
