DEPARTMENT/PROGRAM SUMMARY
Project CENTRO: Centering Estudiantes, Nepantla, Tradiciones, Research, and Orgullo, is a USDOE Title V HSI grant at CSUMB guided by Dr. Suzanne Garcia Mateus who is the PI. Project Centro aims to further develop El Centro for students. It primarily focuses on Latine student success work by providing culturally relevant support services and promoting an inclusive campus environment. The project will focus on three main strategies: Connection & Belonging (fostering authentic connections between students, faculty, and staff, and drive intentional student success support programs, including the Undocu-Success Center, will be achieved through mentorship, coaching, and holistic engagement); Professional & Institutional Learning (aiming to cultivate a supportive learning environment that values both academic and affective outcomes); and Capacity & Infrastructure (a focus on strengthening CSUMB’s ability to serve a diverse group of students, especially Latine students (e.g. including those from an undocumented/mixed-status backgrounds) through the establishment of inclusive and physically relevant space for El Centro, and the mining, sharing and analyses of HSI related data for increased student success outcomes. El Centro intends to improve student retention, reduce drop, fail, withdraw (DFW) rates, increase four-year degree completion, and enhance students’ sense of belonging, with an emphasis on Latine identity. The program outcomes will be assessed through data analysis of enrollment, retention, degree completion, sense of belonging, and Pell utilization.
The position also supports the Undocu-Success Center, which supports undocumented students, mixed-status families, and other immigrant students by providing helpful information complemented with guidance and support from staff and the student ambassadors. The Undocu-Success Center partners with other programs on campus, and community organizations to create events that welcome students into our campus, in order to increase retention rates, aid students impacted by undocumented status realities in understanding local, state, and national laws & policies affecting them, and to create a greater understanding of the undocumented narrative on and off campus. The Undocu-Success Center provides K-12 partners with information on how to better support their students impacted by undocumented policies, as well as academic and career options available to them, host UndocuAlly trainings and facilitate workshops, develop English and Spanish promotional materials, and continually update the Undocu-Success website.
POSITION SUMMARY
Under the general leadership of and reporting to the Associate Director of El Centro, under the general guidance from the Director of the Otter Cross Cultural Center, the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, and the Vice President for EMSA, the Coordinator will have a focus on academic retention and persistence, and be the primary point of contact for students through El Centro, coordinating mentorship and coaching, and leading collaborative relationships with other campus service providers to filter services into El Centro and deliver them to students. This individual will also be responsible for ensuring experiential learning students are placed and supported on Participatory Action Research teams. The El Centro Coordinator plays a pivotal role in advancing belongingness and student success, especially Latine and/or undocumented students at CSUMB. The position focuses on developing programming that supports academic, social, and career success, enhancing student engagement, and fostering a sense of belonging. Key responsibilities include organizing workshops, mentoring, and tutoring sessions, as well as managing events that promote student success and resource utilization. The coordinator works collaboratively with faculty, advisors, and student affairs staff to address barriers and provide holistic support. Additional duties include managing communications through social media and websites, facilitating financial aid and basic needs resources, and collaborating with Enrollment Management & Student Affairs on orientations and registration events. The role emphasizes data-driven decision-making, requiring program evaluation and outcomes assessment to ensure continuous improvement. Through these efforts, the coordinator helps build a strong network of support for students and alumni, contributing to long-term institutional change and student success. The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of college programs, student outreach, support and counseling, research, and interview techniques, and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include. but are not limited to. the following:
• Develop programming for students to assure academic, social, career and academic success strategies are assisting students toward graduation
• Assist in program evaluation and data collection efforts to measure outcomes and ensure continuous improvement
• Work closely with faculty, academic advisors, and student affairs professionals to track, assess, identify and address barriers to student success and promote a holistic approach to support
• Update and manage resources on the website and social media accounts
• Facilitate, develop and/or hold coaching, training, tutoring and/or mentoring sessions
• Manage and organize weekly engagement events in collaboration with campus providers
• Work with Enrollment Management & Student Affairs to design, plan and implement prospective students, especially Latine and/or undocumented students and family informational sessions
• Place experiential learning students on PAR teams in collaboration with grant Project Director
• Support OC3 with recognition ceremonies for degree completers
• In collaboration with the Project Director, plan and implement alumni/ae forums to connect students, build a strong network, update alum on progress and solicit mentors
• Work closely with the Office of Financial Aid and the Director of Care and Basic Needs to facilitate relief for challenges that impact student progress
• Under the guidance of Enrollment Management & Student Affairs directors, and in collaboration with Academic Affairs where appropriate, schedule and coordinate enrollment and registration events for new and at-risk students
• Under the guidance of the Director of New Student Programs and Enrollment Management, facilitate and schedule programming and orientation for new incoming students, especially undocumented and/or Latine students
• Design, produce and implement El Centro and/or undocumented workshops and informational sessions, and distribute activity schedules for current and prospective students and families
• Hold weekly engagement events in collaboration with campus providers
• Collaborate with other on and off-campus partners to raise awareness about diverse student experiences of undocumented students. Prepare oral and written reports, when needed, on issues and concerns of undocumented student immigrants
• Develop surveys and other instruments to measure student outcomes and other aspects of program effectiveness.
• Work with Project Director to promote UROC Research Workshops to El Centro and PAR Students
OTHER FUNCTIONS
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Attend workshops, conferences as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree and 6 months to two years of increasingly responsible program planning experience, project management or student affairs work, with preference for experience working with college students in an academic environment.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
• Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence.
• Experience working with students with Latine backgrounds
• Bilingual (Spanish)

The hourly hiring range for this position is $28 – $30. Classification: Grade 3, Staff. This is a non-exempt position and as such is eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
