Responsibilities
The Executive Director of the Associated Students (AS) of California State University, Northridge, is the
senior executive professional position for the organization, and is responsible for providing
comprehensive strategic vision, leadership and management oversight for a wide range of duties in
support of the administration of the corporate, programmatic, developmental, service, human resource,
financial, and governmental affairs of the AS for the benefit of the students and the University community
of CSUN. The position reports to both the AS President and to the Associate Vice President of Student
Affairs. The incumbent supervises the leadership of six department managers (Human Resources, Risk
Management, Marketing, Accounting, Information Technology, and Student Leadership), and of the
executive assistant, and of the Associate Executive Director who, in turn, supervises seven program
departments; indirectly oversees the work of 50 staff employees and approximately 200 student
employees and volunteers; creates and revises a compensation package for staff employees that is
commensurate with their responsibilities, to include a vigorous and appropriate benefits package;oversees continuing personal and professional development for staff and student employees; oversees
Human Resource policy development and interpretation; directs the leadership of the Accounting
Services office in executing the budgeting, reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll,
asset management, general ledger, cash management, investment, taxation, accounting and audit
functions associated with that department; maintains the corporation’s fiscal integrity by accurate
assessment and allocation of resources, developing sound budget processes, implementing fiscal
controls, and monitoring actual practices. Oversee responses to audits to that same end; oversees the
annual budget request and review processes ($9+ million dollars) and, with the Finance Committee and
Senate or Board of Directors, develop the annual budget and amendments to it throughout the year;
oversees revenue stream, primarily from mandatory student body fee revenue, but also in state and
federal grant monies, and donations, as well as earned income through user fees, payment for services,
and interest income; administers the annual and in-year funding processes of the campus Instructionally
Related Activity (IRA) Fee Advisory Board and advise requestors on the nature of that fee and its
budgeting and eligibility criteria, serving as the Board’s Executive Secretary. The incumbent oversees all
AS facilities and tangible assets; ensures that health and safety policies (including those of Cal OSHA
and ADA) and practices are followed and that staff maintain and repair facilities; oversees use of leased
spaces which house AS programs and services in eleven locations on campus; interprets and ensures
adherence to federal, state and local laws and regulations and California State University and campus
policies; develops, advises and proposes language for the organization’s Constitution, codes, policies,
contracts, and resolutions and then interpret and ensure adherence thereto; assesses and mitigates
unwarranted exposures to risk. The incumbent also oversees long-term strategic planning for and
assessment of all programs and services in partnership with constantly changing student leadership;
oversees marketing and public relations approach and implementation to provide needs assessment,
advertising and promotion of programs and services, and coherent presence to the media in all formats ;
oversees the Information Technology department to ensure thrifty, well-functioning, and secure
hardware, software and network capability; through the Controller, oversees the Accounting and
Financial Services department to ensure proper and effective use of the AS financial resources;
oversees the risk-management function to ensure proper execution of agreements of all kinds; to reduce
the likelihood of harm or risk to others and/or to minimize the harm caused by any unfortunate event;
oversees the human resource functions to ensure a healthy and productive work force; oversees the
Student Leadership staff employees and student employees, except for Cabinet members, who report to
the AS President; provides consultation to the AS executive officers, the Board of Directors (Senators)
and Cabinet, with a primary focus on corporate matters; through the Associate Executive Director,
oversees the program offerings of the CSUN AS: Productions, Sport Clubs, Children’s Center, Ticket
Office, Outdoor Adventures, the Children’s Center, Student Legal Support Center, and Sustainability and
Recycling; serves as member of Student Affairs Management Council, Student Affairs Leadership Team,
and Student Life leadership team; develops partnerships with academic and administrative deans and
directors on campus to enhance the educational experience of students in and out of the classroom;
serves on auxiliary and CSUN committees, boards and task forces, as well as CSU and professional
organization committees and other groups; promotes continuity and excellence in student leadership and
organizational success; informs and educates the Board and other student leadership groups of federal,
state, local, CSU, and campus laws, regulations, policies, and procedures that govern AS matters;
provides learning opportunities for student staff and for student leadership, through retreats,
conferences, seminars, group advisement, and one-on-one exchanges; serves simultaneously as
employee of and coach/mentor/teacher to corporate board members, officers and directors; serves as an
ex officio, non-voting member of the Board and as a voting member of its Personnel Board; and performs
other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Earned Master’s degree from an accredited institution in higher education, business or public
administration or similar discipline related to the departments of CSUN AS is required. A minimum of 7
years of full-time, progressively responsible leadership experience required in a similar organization; 10
years preferred. Professional experience within a university based auxiliary organization is strongly
preferred.
