GENERAL STATEMENT
The Student Leadership Coordinator assists the Assistant Director in the support of ASI Student Government leadership and program development, board governance and transparency, and execution of annual programs and events. The Student Leadership Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and advising Beach Team, a mentoring and volunteer program for students interested in student government, coordinating the annual elections process, coordinating program and event logistics as the liaison to Beach Pride Events. Additionally, the Student Leadership Coordinator advises, trains, and supervises programs associated with assigned ASI boards and respective student leaders, under the direction of the Assistant Director and Senior Coordinator. The incumbent will work to create learning experiences for Beach Team members and student government officers, as well as foster their personal and professional growth.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Recruits, trains, motivates, advises, facilitates and manages Beach Team program.
2. Facilitates trainings on leadership, advocacy, personal and professional development for student government officers, boards, and Beach Team members.
3. Provides advising and programmatic support including event planning, logistics and implementation.
4. Recruits student leaders to serve on academic and university committees, distributes directory information of said student leaders to committee chairpersons, trains student leaders to utilize the committee report form, and consolidates reports to be reviewed by the ASI President and general public.
5. Assists the Government Affairs staff with the planning, coordination, and facilitation of the Student Government retreats, board trainings, and board meetings.
6. Maintains accurate tracking records for departmental budgets and reconciles various accounts and statements.
7. Recruits student government officers and provides on-board training to new officers as vacancies are filled throughout the year.
8. Supports the Assistant Director in coordinating ASI General Elections events, and facilitates trainings for prospective candidates as needed.
9. Supports the Assistant Director in facilitating assessment tools to evaluate student government learning outcomes, development workshops, and leadership retreats.
10. May advise boards/sub-boards as delegated by the Assistant Director, Government Affairs & Initiatives, ensuring that each board has consistent and, at times, multiple layers of advisements.
11. Supports student government’s involvement in major programs: Week of Welcome, Smorgasport, Homecoming, ASI Night, ASI Elections, Take a Sec with the Execs, ASI Awards Banquet, and other student programming, as needed.
12. Supports the Government office staff in initiatives regarding diversity, equity, inclusion and access as it pertains to student leadership and involvement.
13. Interacts with a variety of campus and community constituents, including students, faculty and staff.
14. Supports in the coordination of travel arrangements for student body Executive Officers and other ASI student government representatives attending CSSA functions and/or related activities.
15. Supports in the preparation of agendas, minutes, and supporting material for distribution. Ensures timely distribution of material to comply with the Gloria Romero Act of 2000.
16. Under direction from the Senior Coordinator, serves as Recording Secretary for ASI governing boards and its sub-boards and committees. Drafts minutes of board meetings for review by staff, student leaders, and/or the executive director.
17. Composes and prepares written documentation and correspondence for the office. Screens and evaluates incoming and outgoing correspondence and prepares responses as appropriate.
18. Performs other clerical duties as needed, such as filing, photocopying, and collating. Operates office machines such as transcribing machine, date stamper, calculator, and photocopier.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of education and work experience required; leadership experience in student government, student organizations, or advising such organizations is preferred.
Knowledge and Abilities
A successful candidate will possess strong student development knowledge, counseling skills and the ability to connect well with students. Must be willing to work with an ethnically and culturally diverse group of student staff and volunteers. Exceptional customer service skills are a must. Must possess enhanced leadership skills. General knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior. General knowledge of assessment relating to student learning outcomes. General knowledge of parliamentary procedure. A strong combination of specific academic and/or experiential training is recommended.
Excellent interpersonal, written, time management and verbal communication skills.
Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning events, trainings and student involvement. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with interruptions. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse academic community. Ability to use independent judgment, critical thinking skills, and analytical skills. Ability to maintain professionalism and determine appropriate application of ASI and University policies or guidelines.
The employee will need excellent organizational, time and stress management skills to complete multi-task interactions with the approximately 60 student government leaders, campus community, and the general public during standard business hours.
Other Qualifications
This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter (General) and requires the incumbent to report observed or suspected abuse or neglect of children within the scope of their employment. All ASI employees designated as Mandated Reporters are required to complete training at the start of their employment.
